Not every walker needs a technical mountain boot. The Taurus Pro GTX Mid is Lowa's straightforward leather walking boot, and Amazon lists a leather outer, a textile lining, a leather insole, a rubber sole and an ankle-high shaft, with Gore-Tex named in the model. It appears in three of our guides because it does the basics of British hill walking without fuss: dry feet, some ankle coverage and a leather upper that can be looked after for years.

In its favour
- Ankle-high leather upper is listed, a cut that covers the ankle bones on uneven paths.
- Gore-Tex in the model name for a waterproof liner in wet British weather.
- A leather insole and textile lining are listed, a mix that is comfortable and dries reasonably fast.
Good to know
- Water resistance is listed as water resistant in one field, so check Lowa's details.
- The listing gives 1.8 kg without saying whether that is per pair.
Our take
The listing in plain English
Seasons are given as all, and the occasion field is walking. One oddity is the water resistance field, which says water resistant rather than waterproof, despite GTX in the name. That field is likely generic; the Gore-Tex membrane implied by the model name is what keeps water out.
The item weight is listed as 1.8 kg. As with many boot listings, there is no clarification of whether that means one boot or a pair, so it is best not to compare it directly with figures quoted per boot elsewhere.
Textile lining and leather insole
A textile lining against the membrane tends to feel cooler and dries faster than a full leather lining, which suits British summers and mixed spring days. The leather insole is less common at this level and should mould to the underfoot over time.
For care, brush off mud while it is still soft, rinse, dry the boots slowly at room temperature, and apply a leather treatment that is compatible with a membrane. Avoid drying them on a radiator, which can crack leather.
Taurus Pro against the Renegade GTX Mid and Trango TRK GTX
Within Lowa's range, the Renegade GTX Mid is the long-running leather mid many people already know. The Taurus Pro is the simpler alternative and makes sense if you want a basic leather Lowa without the Renegade's reputation attached.
La Sportiva's Trango TRK GTX is the other leather ankle boot in our ankle-support guide. It carries a more mountain-oriented name, while the Taurus Pro is pitched more squarely at everyday walking.
Who might look elsewhere
If you carry heavy packs off path, the calf-height Lowa Tibet Evo GTX gives more structure. If you want something lighter for summer, a suede and fabric boot such as the Lowa Zephyr GTX Mid TF will feel less substantial on the foot.
Verdict
The Taurus Pro GTX Mid suits walkers who want a no-nonsense leather Lowa with Gore-Tex for year-round hill walking. Choose the Lowa Renegade GTX Mid if you prefer the better-known model, or the La Sportiva Trango TRK GTX if you want a leather boot with a more mountain-focused design.
