Waterproof boots

Gore-Tex and leather boots for wet British hills. Men's and women's lasts differ in heel width and volume, not only in size.

Most waterproof boots use a membrane bootie inside the upper. It keeps water out while letting some vapour escape, but once the outer fabric is soaked, breathability drops sharply.

Full-grain leather boots without a membrane can stay dry for years if they are waxed regularly. Women's models are built on a separate last with a narrower heel and lower volume.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting any boot to stay dry when water comes over the cuff.
  • Skipping reproofing, so the outer wets out and the boot feels clammy.
