The Kinesis Pro GTX is Scarpa's leather backpacking boot for walkers who want a membrane. Amazon lists a 2.4 mm Smoothout leather upper, a PFAS-free Gore-Tex Standard ePE lining, a Vibram Biometric sole with XS Trek rubber and an 825 g weight. In our leather boot guide, it is the boot that pairs a substantial leather upper with the latest version of Gore-Tex.

In its favour

  • The listing gives a 2.4 mm leather upper, a robust thickness for rocky and heathery ground.
  • Gore-Tex Standard ePE lining is stated and described as PFAS free.
  • A Vibram Biometric sole in XS Trek compound is named for grip on mixed hill terrain.

Good to know

  • The listed weight of 825 g does not say if it is per boot, so compare carefully.
  • Listed seasons are spring and summer, so check warmth for winter walking.

Our take

Specs in daily use

A 2.4 mm leather is slightly thinner than the 2.7 mm on the Scarpa SL Active, but still thick enough to give a supportive, durable boot. Smoothout refers to the finish of the leather, which should make cleaning easier than with a nubuck.

The membrane is Gore-Tex Standard ePE, the newer PFAS-free version. It aims to keep water out while letting sweat escape. The Activ Plus insole and a Vibram Biometric outsole complete the boot.

Living with a leather membrane boot

Leather boots with Gore-Tex need care in two ways. First, keep the leather clean and treated so it does not soak up water, which would reduce breathability. Second, avoid drying the boots near direct heat, which can damage both leather and membrane.

Expect some break-in. A boot of this weight will feel stiffer than a fabric mid at first, but it rewards walkers with steady support on rough paths.

Kinesis Pro against the SL Active and Vioz Lux

The Scarpa SL Active has thicker leather and no membrane, relying on wax for water resistance. Choose it if you prefer a breathable traditional boot. The Kinesis Pro is the pick if you want the security of Gore-Tex.

Zamberlan's Vioz Lux GTX RR combines a leather upper and lining with Gore-Tex. It is warmer and more traditional. The Kinesis Pro, with a membrane lining instead of leather, may feel lighter and cooler.

Who it may not suit

Walkers who want a light, flexible boot for summer paths should look at Scarpa's Rush range. Those wanting a stated resolable construction should check with Scarpa, since the listing does not say.

Fit is worth a careful look too. The listing gives no width information, so walkers with broad forefeet should try the boot with their usual socks and walk down a slope or stairs to check that toes do not touch the front.

Verdict

Buy the Kinesis Pro GTX if you want a modern leather backpacking boot with PFAS-free Gore-Tex and a Vibram sole. For a breathable boot without a membrane, the Scarpa SL Active is the alternative, and for a leather-lined classic, look at the Zamberlan Vioz Lux GTX RR.
