Top picks at a glance

Compare them all
  • Best overall

Zamberlan Vioz Lux GTX RR: leather lined, Gore-Tex

Leather upper and leather lining are both listed, the traditional build for a long-lived boot.

  • Best value

Meindl Burma Pro MFS GTX: leather, Vibram Multigriff

The listing names a Vibram Multigriff sole, a deep-lugged outsole used on many mountain boots.

  • Most features

Scarpa Kinesis Pro GTX: 2.4 mm leather, Gore-Tex ePE

The listing gives a 2.4 mm leather upper, a robust thickness for rocky and heathery ground.

A good leather boot is the long game in walking footwear. Full-grain or nubuck leather moulds to your foot, sheds water when it is waxed, shrugs off rock and heather and can often be resoled when the tread wears down. The trade-offs are weight, a longer break-in and more care: leather needs cleaning and feeding to stay supple and waterproof. Look at the thickness of the leather where it is stated, the lining (leather linings feel warm and hard wearing, fabric and membrane linings dry faster), the sole and whether the maker offers resoling. This guide compares seven leather walking boots using only what each listing states. Where a listing leaves out something important, such as a resole service or weight per pair, the cons say so. Sizes on amazon.co.uk are in UK sizes first; check the maker's chart, as Italian and German lasts differ.
